Degrowth is not a bad habit?
The economy is not a profit-producing unit, Industries produce too many goods and the consumers buy and boost up the profit. Is this enough for us? Growth is only related to income, It doesn't reveal the standard of living, resources, health, poverty & development. When we produce and consume more just for sake of profits, that's so selfish! There might be huge economic growth now but it won't be a sustainable one. The economy will grow only till the natural resources are available. There won't be consistency. The growth will retard in the future.
People from the west were early on track, have realized that using resources to the maximum, producing less waste, and consuming less food, save a lot of energy. This might deteriorate the growth but this has a growing concern towards the long term. From this pandemic, we realized that we could reduce wastage, save money, and lead a simple life. . Degrowth has got innovative ideas like selling second-hand products & clothes, "flight shaming" where people controlled their unnecessary expenses on a flight on concern with pollution and natural resources, electric vehicles.
Now, this case is about the west where they are malnourished. Let's see how Maitreesh Ghatak illustrated how this is difficult for developing countries like India and China who are malnutrition as degrowth will lead them to poverty. So, These countries should go hand in hand with growth and degrowth.
Good day!
